Advice

I've found that reading about other people's experiences either on internet or in books has been invaluable as I really did think I was going mad and it was good to know this fear is a normal symptom.

I found a website which advised expressing your anger if you usually find it difficult to do so. It doesn't have to be done 'for real' you can just think the angry thoughts, usually towards an authority figure, such as a parent or maybe your partner. I do this when I feel anxiety coming over me and it often helps, even if I don't feel all that angry, it still works!

A couple of weeks ago I was suicidal, but I thought to myself, well if I'm going to kill myself I might as well go ahead and do some of the things I've been scared of or holding back from doing, cos it really doesn't matter now - I don't have to protect anyone, worry about what people think, etc. The great thing is that by doing these things, life actually seems worth living.

I've had pretty bad anxiety and depression for over 5 years, and I realise now it's because I'm stuck and frightened to change, but finally I'm going to try.

Wish me luck and very best of luck to everyone else out there. clareburgess@tiscali.co.uk 27.07.03
