Case Studies

I'm really worried about my mum. She has suffered from depression for the past 11 years, since my father died. A lot of the time she is great and we have a really good relationship, but every now and then something really small will send her over the edge. When my mum gets upset it's like she trys to do or say anything to drive me and my brother away, she says really nasty things (that she never remembers saying afterwards). I have learnt over the years to brush it off as I know she doesn't mean it.

However last weekend we went to London, we went to the Theatre and did some site seeing - all to show mum how special she is. It ended in disaster. This time she picked up on something my brothers girlfriend said to her - which wasn't at all meant in a nasty or rude way - and took it as being very offensive. Now for the past four days all she has talked about is how rude and disgusted she is with my brothers girlfriend. She has ended up really upsetting everyone, I inparticular am feeling totally drained. She admits she is depressed and drinks too much but when I suggest going to the doctor for help she says no, and then goes back to this one thing that was said over 4 days ago.

I really don't know what to do. Obviously I want to support my mum, but everything I suggest she doesn't want to do. She says she's got no life, nothing to live for and wants to commit suicide. I can't seem to help. I know this is only a relatively short episode but because this has affected other people this time I can't just brush it off. I know it isn't normal for someone to get so upset over such a minor incident, but she isn't prepared to get any help. Has anyone got any advice?

Tory
