The Dance
I see the crowds dancing, together as one, all friends they are,
Just for now that is, for tomorrow they will be at war,
Yet they are unaware of what lies beneath their transient chemical love,
Monsters from the id that is, and where is God in all of this?
Part reptile, part reason, their smiles obscure the truth,
This is a dance of love maybe, or just a basic expression of youth?
Now I look again closely and see it for what it is,
Facial muscles grimacing, so where is God in all of this?
And now I see that beauty is cruel, just another optical illusion,
It lies; it deceives just like the smile of a friendly foe,
Just another way of hiding what lies beneath that transient visual love,
Monsters in the deep waters of the soul, so where are you God?
Yet still the dance continues, and we're all puppets surreal and absurd,
No I don't want to be like you but I dare not utter a word,
For I must play my role, act my part, make the right moves,
We can pretend to love each other, but where is God to make it real?
And I realise now, this is a trance! It's a dream and I can't wake up,
Caught up in the netherworld and I must look strange to you,
I want to love you all but you're becoming real so I'll put you out of mind,
Avoid those deep waters like mum said, so deep but so unkind!
Can I paddle now and then though? Dear God I hope you don't mind.
Steve
