Weakness

When I was a small one I thought I was great,
A little emperor in my own right,
I had all these little toys and things,
And launched them into flight!

I ruled my little private world,
I dreamed I was in charge,
But all the while unaware,
Of the big, wide world at large,

Since then I've grown and seen truth,
That I was just a fool,
A spoiled little hubris child,
Trying so hard to act cool,

So now I'm older now and wiser,
Yet I don't know who I am,
I'm saddened by my history,
Never really been a man,

Humbled to the point of shame,
Embarrassed by my mess,
Looking for others to blame,
But myself I can't redress,

Afraid of my own reflection,
A bloated and wretched sight,
A model of cruel rejection,
A creature of the night,

And when I see the beauty,
The works of God on Earth,
I cower and stammer and fade away,
As they remind me of what I'm worth,

But in my dreams I look to restore,
The feelings of yesterday,
Remembering the dreams I'd had before,
When I believed that this life was ok.
